Trapped for 12 days in a car – what happened to Gaza’s Hind Rajab? | The Take
In this emotional episode of “The Take,” we hear the tragic story of six-year-old Hind Rajab during the Israel–Hamas war. Her story is a heart-wrenching reminder of the humanitarian crises faced by civilians in conflict zones.
Hind’s family tried to escape Gaza City but was tragically attacked, leading to the deaths of her parents and siblings. Hind and her cousin, 15-year-old Lean, were the only survivors. Lean’s plea for assistance from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) was hampered by military operations and communication issues.
During this situation, PRCS dispatcher Rana Fakih stayed in contact with Hind, who was stuck in the car with her deceased family. Hind expressed her fear, particularly of the dark, pleading for rescue.
Despite PRCS’s efforts to coordinate an ambulance with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), rescue attempts were obstructed by Israeli military presence and gunfire. After 12 days without a successful rescue, Hind and two paramedics were found dead near the original site, revealing violations of international humanitarian law.
This tragic incident highlights the emotional toll on humanitarian workers and the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 10,000 children have died in the conflict.
